Veteran tycoon behind Macau's ascent beyond Las Vegas in the gambling industry, passes away at 95 years old.
Galaxy Entertainment's Chairman Lui Che Woo Passes Away at 95
In a significant loss for the gambling and real estate industry, Lui Che Woo, the chairman of Galaxy Entertainment, passed away on November 7 at the age of 95. Lui was known for his understated demeanor, often wearing a flat cap.
Lui made his initial fortune through the Hong Kong-listed K. Wah Group, where he was involved in quarry mining and construction. He later took the helm at Galaxy Entertainment, one of the six Macau gambling license holders.
Under Lui's visionary leadership, Galaxy Entertainment surpassed Las Vegas as the world's biggest gambling hub in 2006. The company owns more real estate on the Cotai Strip than any other concessionaire, making it a major player in Macau's gambling industry. Lui's contributions to Macau's success as a gambling hub were instrumental.
Despite Lui's passing, Galaxy Entertainment's operations will not be affected. Francis Lui Yiu Tung, son of Lui Che Woo, has been appointed as the new chairman of Galaxy Entertainment Group. Francis has been with the company since 1979 and has held an executive director role since June 1987.
Francis is also the chairman of K. Wah Group and has made significant contributions to Macao’s tourism industry. He is the inaugural Chair of the Trustees Committee of the Macao University of Tourism (UTM) Development Foundation, Vice-Chair of the UTM Council, and Director of the Francis Y.T. Lui Charity Foundation Limited. In recognition of his contributions, a teaching building at UTM is named after him.
Other children of Lui Che Woo work globally in various aspects of the family's business interests. The future of Galaxy Entertainment is in capable hands, and the company is expected to continue its success under the leadership of Francis Lui.
